'Panot Pallooza' - OFFF 2026 Open Call Selected work for the Dissney Hub Screen

Panot Palooza
Over 100 years ago, as Barcelona rapidly expanded, the city council standardised five pavement tile designs that would come to define the streets of the city. These tiles, known as ‘Panots’, have since become an integral part of Barcelona’s visual identity, with the ‘Flor de Barcelona’ panot becoming a symbol of the city itself.
When OFFF announced their open call for The Screen I knew I wanted to create something that looked like it belonged on the side of the Dissney Hub. What better way to do this than to celebrate pieces of design that are a part of every day life - whether people notice or not.

Digitising the Panots
I looked at the various panot designs and chose the ones that I believed would work the best once animated. This included the flower, circular, skull, Gaudi and the infamous banana leaf tiles (due to the fact that the design is both uncomfortable to walk on and unreliable with thousands being replaced after breaking).

Making them move
Once digitised I took each design into After Effects and played around with the different ways I could reveal the designs whilst keeping each one visually interesting when looped. I took the shape of the Dissney Hub and split it into four sections each containing three segments. The goal was to create a trippy visual feast which I thought could be achieved with the looping patterns placed into clipping masks that helped framed the building.
Final Submission
I thought the black and red was a bit too ominous and so I decided to change the colours to the obvious choice of red and yellow. Each section then alternated between having red or yellow as it's primary colour. This meant that when key-framed at different intervals they would sometimes overlap, merge and become a panot party.
